Transfer student college experience?

I'm a freshman in college this year and am considering transferring. A part of me really wants to transfer just because i think I will be happier in a more lively city (I'm currently in Rochester, NY) that is closer to mountains (I love to snowboard) and at a school that has better programs for my major. I'm only apprehensive about the transfer process itself; going through the whole, not-knowing-anyone stage again. To people who have been transfer students, what was your experience like? Did you find it hard to acclimate?
